Say It Loud! Newspaper makes the Daily News!

We were amongst the other talented writers spotlighted in the San Fernando Valley Daily News recently.

The cause: The 1 year anniversary of Say It Loud!, the San Fernando Valley's Black Newspaper.

Saharra White, editor-in-chief, has been busy distributing this ground-breaking paper around the world (literally). Saharra is currently in Uganda offering her group building skills along with Tiffany Lucero.

We feel honored to be one of the staff writers at Say It Loud!

Check out a brief of the article below:

CSUN student launches newspaper aimed at African-Americans

By Justino Aguila, Staff Writer

The Daily News 11/27/1008

Saharra White knew that starting a newspaper wouldn't be easy given the state of the publishing industry and the souring economy - but she also knew it was the right thing to do.

As a student, she had very little money, but a lot of hope and plenty of support from her friends and family.

Then last year, inspired by the injustices of the world and Sen. Barack Obama's bid for president, Say It Loud! was born - a newspaper for African-Americans of the San Fernando Valley.

It gave the then-California State University, Northridge, student something to do for her community as she continued to pursue her journalistic dreams.

She used her small savings to launch the paper and received donations from friends.

"I wanted to start the newspaper because there are black people in the Valley doing some positive things," said White, 24. "If this paper was available back when I was in middle school, my life would have been easier."

I Am Not A N*gga, I'm A MAN! James Baldwin Speaks

James Baldwin, who is by far our favorite writer, was also a heavy activist during the Rights Movement of the 1960s. Here he is offering a discourse on life as a Black man in America as well as a short conjecture on The "N" Word.

*** Key phrase: "I am not a n*gga, I'm a MAN!"

Karrine Steffans Battles A Student At Cal State Northridge

We had to post some of the videos filmed by The Golden Machine at the highly controversial "Karrine Steffans Speaks" event at Cal State Northridge.

Our videos have been appearing on blogs all over the internet.

Steffans was brought to CSUN by the Hip Hop Think Tank and she presented to an overflow crowd (and we truly mean OVERflow). Her book Confessions of a Video Vixen is a staple text in Dr. Karin Stanford's Politics of Hip Hop course, seeing that it sheds light on the roles of women in Hip Hop.

Our article entitled "I Have A Name and It's Not Superhead!: Hip Hop's Bastardizing Suppression of Female Expression", published last year in the HHTT journal, further explains her relevance to Hip Hop academia.

The event, held last Thursday, drew a crowd of anxious college students who were ready to judge her for her experiences in Hip Hop. What materialized was an understanding of her veracity and love of life lessons.

Towards the end of the event, Steffans had to go toe-to-toe with a college student seen in the videos below who felt disrespected by Steffans. Needless to say, even without our intervention, Steffans was able to shut her down in a classy fashion ((See videos 2 and 3)).

Watch the attached videos as well as the rest of them posted on our YouTube page and let us know what you think.

This is the COLLEGE student acting a fool with Dr. Stanford outside after getting an attitude with Karrine Steffans... (Note: Dr. Stanford telling me "call security")

The 2008 American Music Awards Review

The American Music Awards 2008 were dominated with female artists this year. The performances on Sunday night were some of the best of the year for any award show. Without all the controversy, award shows may actually become a much better reflection of artistic accomplishment.

Beyonce's version of "Single Ladies" is her best to date. She is unparalleled as a performer and was easily the best of the night. (9.5/10)

Mariah's version of "I Stay In Love" is perhaps her best live performance since 2003. She belted that song out! (9/10)

Rihanna left a lot to be imagined. We will put her in the category of great performers, who shouldn't act like they can sing. We still loved her attempt. (7/10)

Ne-Yo was surprisingly good. We aren't the biggest Ne-Yo fan, but he attempted to fill some of the void left by Usher, Chris Brown and the rest of the men. (8.5/10)

Pink is consistently outstanding. She can sing. That's all there is to it. (9.5/10)

Christina Aguilera embodies the true vocal capabilities of this generation. She is easily the best female singer (behind Beyonce) and has proved she has a lasting power! (9/10)

We must say that the highlight of the night was the duet between Alicia Keys and Queen Latifah. As if it couldn't get any better, legendary Opera singer Kathleen Battle came on stage and added a third element to the performance. Genius. Alicia is highly consistent and although she's not the best vocalist, she has the gift of musicianship.

Check out all of the clips below. What performance stood out to you?

Beyonce/Sasha Fierce: Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)

Mariah Carey: I Stay In Love

Rihanna: Rehab

Ne-Yo: Closer

Alicia Keys/Queen Latifah/Kathleen Battle: Superwoman

Pink: Sober

Christina Aguilera: Greatest Hits Medley

Sasha Fierce Film's "Diva"

Beyonce's alter-ego Sasha Fierce was recently filming her latest video in Los Angeles this past weekend. The video for the club anthem "Diva" appears to be blowing up a woman in the trunk. This should be rather interesting. Check out the clip and let us know what you think.

Race Still Matters... Even After Obama's Win

We were walking around the Cal State Northridge Campus recently with Estella when we were suddenly bombarded with this inconsiderate and highly offensive t-shirt worn by a white student on campus.

The T-shirt reads "Obama you my nigga!".

In the name of all that is holy and sacred... If we think that any type of racism or social labeling structure has been defeated, then we should expect to become blind victims.

...Interestingly enough, he had the audacity to question why we were offended.

What do you think about this?

We also wish her well as she tries to recover from illness.

Jim Jones Takes Hip Hop To Broadway and Beyond

Rapper Jim Jones, one of our favorites, has created a Hip Hop Off-Broadway Musical entitled Hip Hop Monologues: Inside the Life and Mind of Jim Jones. based on songs from his upcoming album. This is absolutely ingenious. We are supposed to be developing a musical based on Hip Hop Soul with Patrice... yet another task at The Machine.

Jimmy is also producing a documentary on his life titled This Is Jim Jones which has been laced with tragedy including his father and brother's battle with AIDS. Check out both clips and let us know what you think.

This is JIM JONES - The Documentary Trailer

Here is a synopsis of the Monologues from the Jim Jones Camp:
Hip-Hop Monologues: Inside the Life and Mind of Jim Jones is a musical theatrical experience, co-written by Jim Jones, using the music from his upcoming Columbia release, Pray IV Reign, as a platform. Accompanied by a live band and an ensemble of professional actors who will portray various characters from Jim’s past, Jim will perform his new songs in the context of a scripted story. It will ultimately revolutionize the album release experience and is sure to be the industry standard for years to come.

Story Line:

When controversial but true to the street rapper Jim Jones returns home to his Harlem neighborhood, his fame creates quite a buzz with reporters, fans, old friends and jealous enemies. After almost getting killed in an impromptu dice game, Jim is counseled by an old-school elder on how to endure the stresses of being famous and the great responsibility of teaching the next generation. Jim ultimately finds himself having to make the decision of his life: taking the elder’s wise advice or returning to his street ways at the risk of losing everything.

Neo-Soul Flashback: Erykah Badu

We've been feeling rather quiet and reflective at The Machine lately. Here is a Neo-Soul Flashback of Erykah Badu's AD 2000 from her hit album Mama's Gun. This is the live version.

Deborah Cox Releases The Promise!

One of our favorite female vocalists, Deborah Cox, is getting ready to release her newest set entitled The Promise. This is her newest single Did You. It's getting heavy play on urban radio. Check it out here.

Our Publication Review of Sasha Fierce

Beyonce Revolutionizes The Music World: Enter – I Am…Sasha Fierce

by James B. Golden

Every 10-15 years or so, a major female artist emerges as much more than a voice. In the 1960s, Aretha Franklin emerged as the dominant female voice. The 1970s saw the incline of Diana Ross’ musical and film career with her acting debut in Lady Sings The Blues. The 1980s and 1990s were flooded with the massively successful hits of Whitney Houston. The 1990s also was the birthplace of contenders Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.

But 20 years from now, the first decade of the new millennium will be known as the era of Beyonce Knowles.

I Am…Sasha Fierce (2008) does exactly what B’Day (2006) hoped to accomplish fully in modernizing the landscape of R&B, Hip Hop, and Pop. The record is a double disc with one half shedding light to Beyonce’s quiet side (I Am) and the opposite giving a voice to her outer bombshell alter-ego Sasha Fierce. Together, they satisfy the Beyonce fan and set an appropriate soundtrack for any occasion.

I AM

The tracks on I Am (Disc 1) are so shockingly cohesive that Beyonce could have easily released the 8 songs as her entire album. The stand-out tracks on the set are the well-written ballads Halo, Disappear, and the Babyface penned Broken Hearted Girl. Ave Maria is ingenious as it fuses the classic song with new lyrics focusing on a depressed young woman’s journey toward inspiration. Smash Into You, written by Solange, is a gut-wrenching tribute which brings visualizations of a man and woman running to a big finale kiss. The set includes the massively successful If I Were A Boy which is a feminist anthem in its own right.

Sasha Fierce

This set includes bass-heavy tracks which are perfect on those days getting ready to go out to the club. The stand-out tracks on this disc are Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It), Ego, and Radio. Diva stands as Sasha Fierce’s most powerful song asserting “Diva is the female version of a hustla”. Sasha also shines on Sweet Dreams, which offers a very club-ready production style.

Together, these two discs are what the Whitney album was to Whitney Houston or what Share My World was to Mary J. Blige. Although there is much to come from this icon in the next decade, this will stand as a seminal record in her career. With 2 new movies coming out next year, you can expect to see Beyonce making it rain on everyone in the game for a while.

Welcome to 2009: It’s officially Beyonce Season!

Sugababes Add A Motown Inspired Track To Their Collection

Highly acclaimed British group Sugababes have created an interesting track which could potentially increase sales of their newest album Catfights and Spotlights.

"No Can Do" utilizes elements from the Jackson 5 and Diana Ross to create an uptempo head-nodding classic. Check out the video here.

I Had A Chemical Reaction...I Feel Better Now! New Music

We are really feeling this song by underground artist Chaz Shepherd called "Chemical Reaction".

He is very reminiscent of our favorite Neo-Soul Man D'Angelo.

Check out his Myspace page and then listen to the rest of his songs. Here is a sample of it:

Beyonce Has Arrived!!!

I Am...Sasha Fierce, Beyonce's new double-disc hit stores Tuesday. Look out for the full review tomorrow.

J. Edgar Hoover Named an American Gangster!!!!

This absolutely turns us on!

BET's third season of their hit show American Gangster, which profiles some of the biggest and baddest gangsters in American history, has finally taken this show to a ground-breaking level.

Tonight at 10PM, they will profile J. Edgar Hoover and COINTELPRO. This systematic assassination is behind the deaths of our civil rights leaders as well as contemporary threats (i.e. Tupac Shakur).

Be ready to tune in tonight! Here is a profile from BET:

Rap Sheet
Reign: 1920s-1970s
Business: FBI director
Region: United States of America
Claim to Fame: crimes against civil rights leaders
Downfall: Congressional investigation
Sentence: reputation in ruins
Status: deceased
Lesson: You can’t fool all the people all the time.

Case File
The first and most famous director of the FBI consolidated his power through a combination of brilliant public relations moves and compromising personal files he maintained on politicians who held his fate in their hands, including several presidents. Positioned as an avowed and implacable enemy of communism, Hoover was often at odds with left-leaning Black leaders throughout his reign, including Marcus Garvey and Paul Robeson. However during the tumultuous ‘60s decade, Hoover went further, undertaking a virtual counter-revolution against the civil rights movement – with particular venom directed at Martin Luther King – and ultimately enabling the bureau to employ smear campaigns, 'dirty tricks', and even armed attacks on several militant leaders. These strategies were the work of Hoover’s Counter Intelligence Program, or COINTELPRO, which was formed to investigate and undermine ‘subversive’ organizations that were almost invariably aligned with the movement for civil rights.

More than a decade later, U.S. congressional investigations would detail the scope of COINTELPRO’s actions, which implicated the bureau in the framing and even murder of prominent activists.

Prop 8 At The Supreme Court And A Comedian Comes Out!

This just in...

Prop 8 has been picked up by the Supreme Court to challenge legal ramifications of the separatist policy. Check out this out from LA Times:

Reporting from Los Angeles and San Francisco Jessica Garrison -- The California Supreme Court voted 6 to 1 on Wednesday to review legal challenges to Proposition 8, the voter initiative that restored a ban on same-sex marriage, but refused to permit gay weddings to resume pending a final decision.

The court may hold a hearing on the lawsuits as early as March, a timetable that scholars said was swift considering the complexity and importance of the legal issues.

Get the rest of the article here.

Also, the passing of this devastating proposition prompted comedian Wanda Sykes to come out recently.

"You know, I don't really talk about my sexual orientation. I didn't feel like I had to. I was just living my life," Sykes, 44, told a crowd at a gay-rights rally in Las Vegas on Saturday.
This is a great step in fusing two communities.

Solange Introduces Us To T.O.N.Y.!

In our article for VIBE! we are asserting that Solange and a host of other 2008 artists could single-handedly save music from a euthanasia.

This has always been our favorite track off of the record Sol-Angel & The Hadley St. Dreams. The new video has a few surprises too. Check out the video and tell us what you think.

Robin Thicke Is Impressing Us!

We are certainly impressed by Robin Thicke's newly released video for Sweetest Love. It's interesting that he is making better R&B than many classic contemporary artists. This is certainly going to be on The Golden Machine's end of the year video or song countdown. Check out the video and let us know what you think of the song.

Neo Soul Flashback - Jill Scott - Love Rain

This has always been one of our favorite songs. It is one of the reasons we chose to write a book and Jill Scott is the lead hip hop poetess. Her verse, rhyme and rhythm attached to her liquid voice is absolutely undeniable.

We've had the pleasure of seeing her live 3 times since 2001... and she just keeps on getting better. Jill is one of the sisters of soul--often forgotten ... but never too far.

"Love Rain"

Love rain down on me,on me,down on me [4x]

Met him on a thursday, sunny afternoon
Cumulus clouds, 84 degrees
He was brown,deep
Said he wanted to talk about my mission
Listen to my past lives (Word?)
Took me on long walks to places where butterflies rest easy
Talked about Moses and Mumia
Reparations, blue colors, memories of shell topped adidas
He was fresh,like summer peaches
Sweet on my mind like block parties and penny candy
Us was nice and warm,no jacket,no umbrella, just warm
At night we would watch the stars
And he would pyhsically give me each and every one
I felt like cayenne pepper,red,hot,spicy
I felt Dizzy, Sonya, heaven, and Miles between my thighs
Better than love,we made delicious
He me had,had me he
He made me tongue tied
I could hear his rhythm in my thoughts
I was his sharp, his horn section
His boom and his bip
And he was my love

Love rain down on me,on me,down on me

The rain was fallin and,and slowly and sweetly and stinging my eyes
And I could not see that he became my voodoo priest
And I was his faithful concubine
Wide open, wide, loose like bowels after collard greens
The mistake was made
Love slipped from my lips
Dripped down my chin and landed in his lap
And us became new
Now me non-clairvoyant and in love
Made the coochie easy and the obvious invisible
The rain was falling
And I couldn't see the season changing
And the vibe slipping off it's axis
Our beautiful melody became wildly staccato
The rain was falling and I could not see
That I was to be plowed and sowed and fertilized
And left to drown in his sunny afternoon
Cumulus clouds,84 degrees,melody

Love rain down on me,on me,down on me [2x]

[Mos Def]
In stretched my arms towards the sky like blades of tall grass
The sun beat in between my shoulders like carnival drums
I sat still in hopes that it would help my wings grow
So then I would really be fly
And then she arrived
Like day break inside a railway tunnel
Like the new moon, like a diamond in the mines
Like high noon to a drunkard, sudden
She made my heart beat in a now-now time signature
Her skinny canvas for ultarviolet brushstrokes
She was the sun's painting
She was a deep cognac color
Her eyes sparkled like lights along the new city
She lips pursed as if her breath was too sweet
And full for her mouth to hold
I said,"You are beautiful,distress of mathematics."
I said,"For you, I would peel open the clouds like new fruit."
And give you lightning and thunder as dowry
I would make the sky shed all of its stars like rain
I would clasp the constellations around your waist
And I would make the heavens your cape
And they would be please to cover you
They would be pleased to cover you
May I please,cover you,please.

Inaugaration Ball 2009 -- Poem Sent to The Machine

When our dearest professor Johnie Scott sent this poem, we thought it was very moving and fitting to this occasion.

Inauguration Ball 2009

Guests began arriving early. There are no place cards and no name tags.
Everyone knows everyone else here.

Now, there's a grand foursome -
Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz sharing laughs with Martin and Coretta Scott King.
Looks like Hosea Williams refused the limo again, keeping it real.

And my goodness; is that Rosa Parks out there on the dance floor with A. Phillip Randolph?
Seated at a nearby table, Frederick Douglass has a captive audience in
W.E.B. DuBois and Fannie Lou Hamer, and Medgar Evers has just joined them.
Marian Anderson was asked to sing tonight, but she only agreed to do it if
accompanied by Marvin Gaye, John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix.
Look, there's Harriet Tubman. No one knows how she arrived, but there she is.
And my guess is that, when the time comes, no one will see her leave.
There's Jackie Robinson swiftly making his way through the hall as the crowd parts
like the Red Sea to the unmistakable sound of applause.
"Run, Jackie, run!"
Along the way he is embraced by Jessie Owens.
Three beautiful young women arrive with their escorts -
Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney.

Ms. Viola Liuzzo flew in from Michigan, exclaiming, "I could not miss this."
Richard Pryor promised to be on his best behavior.
"But I can't make any guarantees for Redd Foxx and Moms Mabley," he chuckled.

Joe Louis just faked a quick jab to the chin of Jack Johnson,
who smiled broadly while slipping it.

We saw Billy Eckstine and Nat King Cole greet Luther Van Dross. James Brown
and Josh Gibson stopped at Walter Payton's table to say hello.
I spotted Congressman Adam Clayton Powell of Harlem having a lively
political discussion with Eldridge Cleaver.

Pearl Harbor WWII hero Dorey Miller shared a few thoughts
with Crispus Attucks, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

And there is Madam C.J. Walker talking with Marcus Garvey about exporting goods to Africa.
General Benjamin O. Davis flew into Washington safely with an escort
from the 99th Fighter Squadron - better known as The Tuskegee Airman.

At the table on the left are three formidable women - Shirley Chisholm,
Sojourner Truth, and Barbara Jordan - gathered for a little girl-talk... about world politics.

Just behind those three Grand Dames you cannot help but hear,
much less see, Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, Claude McKay, Jean Toomer,
Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Alice Walker
and Lorraine Hansberry go on about all the changes they had seen
from the Red Summer of 1919 on up to The Color Purple
and places in-between where Art truly served as a Tool for Social Change.

As usual, all the science nerds seem to have gathered off in a corner, talking shop.
There's Granville T. Woods and Lewis Latimer needling each other about whose
inventions are better.
Someone jokingly asked Benjamin Banneker if he had
needed directions to Washington.
And George Washington Carver was overheard asking, "What, no peanuts?"
Dueling bands? Anytime Duke Ellington and Count Basie get together, you know
the place will be jumping. Tonight is special, of course, so we have
Miles, Dizzy, and Satchmo sitting in on trumpet, with Coltrane, Cannonball,
and Bird on sax.

Everyone's attention is directed to the dance floor where Bill "Bojangles" Robinson
is tap dancing. Right beside him is Sammy Davis Jr.,
doing his Bojangles routine. And behind his back, Gregory Hines is imitating them both.

Applause and laughter abound! The Hollywood contingent has just
arrived from the Coast. Led by filmmaker Oscar Micheau, Paul Robeson, Cana a Lee,
and Hattie McDaniel, they find their way to their tables.
DorothyDandridge, looking exquisite in gold lamé, is seen signaling
to her husband, Harold Nicholas, who is standing on the floor with brother
Fayard watching Gregory Hines dance.
"Hold me back," quips Harold,
"before I show that youngster how it's done." Much laughter!

Then a sudden hush comes over the room.
The guests of honor have arrived.
The President and Mrs. Obama looked out across the enormous
ballroom at all the historic faces. Very many smiles, precious few dry eyes.
Someone shouted out, "You did it! You did it!"
And President Obama replied,"No sir, you did it;
you all - each and every one of you - did it.
Your guidance and encouragement; your hard work and perseverance. .."
Obama paused, perhaps holding back a tear. "I look at your faces
- your beautiful faces - and I am reminded that The White House was built
by faces that looked just like yours.
On October 3, 1792, the cornerstone of the White House was laid, and the
foundations and main residence of The White House were built mostly by both
enslaved and free African Americans and paid Europeans.
In fact, most of the other
construction work was performed by immigrants, many of whom had not yet become citizens.
Much of the brick and plaster work was performed by Irish and Italian immigrants.
The sandstone walls were built by Scottish immigrants.
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is that The White House is,
ultimately,
The People's House,
with each President serving as its steward.

Since 1792
The People have trimmed its hedges, mowed its lawn, stood guard at the gate,
cooked meals in the kitchen, and scrubbed its toilet bowls.
But 216 years later, The People are taking it back!
"Today, Michelle and I usher in a new era. But while we and our family
look toward the future with so much hope, we know that we must also acknowledge fully
this milestone in our journey.
We want to thank each and every one of you for all
you have done to make this day possible.
I stand here before you, humbled and in awe of your accomplishments
and sacrifice, and I will dedicate my Presidency,
in your honor, to the principles of peace, liberty and freedom.
If it ever appears that I'm forgetting that, I know I can count on you to remind me."

Then he pointed to me near the stage...
"Kenyatta, isn't it time for you to wake up for work?
Isn't it time for all of us to wake up and get to work?"
Suddenly I awake and sit up in bed with a knowing smile.
My wife stirs and sleepily asks if I'm OK.
"I've never been better," I replied,

Black Californians Vote YES on Prop 8, YES on Intolerance, YES on Hatred!

A Bittersweet Election For A Black Californian!

by James B. Golden

We are ashamed of Black Californians.

As a matter of fact, it is shameful and embarrassing to be a Black Californian.

When did we decide to play GOD with the human and civil rights of our brothers and sisters?

When did we decide that our religious views supersede the rights of our brothers and sisters?

According to the LA Times and CNN, 75% of Black Women and 70% of Black Men in California voted YES on Proposition 8 to ban gay marriages. These numbers can be compared to Latinos voting 52% in favor of the proposition and Whites 51% in favor of the proposition.

LA Times:

A lot of Obama/Yes-on-8 voters? The Associated Press exit polls show that African Americans backed Proposition 8 in good numbers. Details here from AP:

California’s black voters, who turned out in droves for Barack Obama, also provided key support in favor of the state’s same-sex marriage ban. Seven in 10 black voters backed a successful ballot measure to overturn the California Supreme Court’s May decision allowing same-sex marriage, according to exit polls for The Associated Press.

This means that Black people have some unresolved issues which need to be examined. First and foremost, we are not the only ethnicity with immense respect and adoration for the teachings of The Bible. California Latinos are heavily guided by the strict code of the Catholic Church, which can have more stringent rules against homosexuality. Yet in still, we find the sins which don't apply directly to us and wage war against those who practice them.

It seems ironic that we have ridden the wave of "CHANGE" this year, in response to Barack Obama's campaign, yet have failed to live up to its potential. A yes vote represents a FAIL in the department of equality and fairness. A yes vote represents unresolved homophobia and/or an assertion of superiority of heterosexual species. A yes vote represents what Paolo Freire would call the "PEDAGOGY OF THE OPPRESSED"! Simply put, the slavemaster does not have to empty his lashes of hate on us any longer, for we now lash our own brothers and sisters with the whip of injustice.

When did we lose sight of the fact that the BIBLE asks us to love rather than judge. Christianity and so many other religions of the world have been built upon the concept of unconditional (agape) love. We ask today "where is that love"? Where is the unconditional understanding which is preached from the pulpit every Sunday at 11 AM?

We cannot fully rejoice in the victory of Obama's historic win, because California has become the victim of a heinous crime against humanity... human dignity... and togetherness. The next step in our journeys must focus on political awareness and informed decision-making. Had Black Californians stopped to examine the fact that their ballot decisions would affect the lives of OTHER PEOPLE, that they could particpate in the disenfranchisement of their now subordinate gay brothers and sisters, then this initiative would have been shunned.

This is not the case, however, due to the fact that Black Californians voted based on their emotions rather than their humanitarian duty. We couldn't imagine a ban on inter-racial marriages or couples of different practicing religions.

It is a sad day in California when a minority group of people lose their rights, and animals gain them. Yes, it is embarrasing to be a Black Californian, because we had faith that this highly liberal state would never support the systematic oppression of anyone, legally.

__________________________________________________________________

Okay maybe we were too harsh on Black Californians. Raymond Leon Roker is one of the 30% who voted NO on Prop 8. He would rather focus on damage control:

"In the coming weeks, those of us who are standing against Proposition 8 -- including, I'm sure, millions of blacks nationwide -- are all going to need unity as we lobby, fight and advocate for either a reversal of this amendment or a new battle in 2010."

We agree. This is the opportune time in history to learn tolerance and respect as a means of teaching. Yet, this proposition passing does not sit well with us at The Machine. Questions still linger around us like must from a pile of month-old dirty laundry.

What have we done? What kind of destructive humans have we become? And how can we get back on the path toward freedom?

Political Awareness.

The Salinas Californian Newspaper Covers The Golden Family Election Party

Here are the exclusive pictures of Valerie and James W. Golden's election night party which appeared on the cover of The Californian this week.

The Golden Family has had a long tradition in political activism and politics--which continues to this very day.

There is reason again for people of color to be excited about the political make-up of America, finally!

We wonder which nominee they were rooting for!

Doesn't This Feel Good!

The Historic Campaign of Cynthia McKinney and Rosa Clemente Not Forgotten

We would like to honor the historic Green Party ticket featuring a Black woman and Afro-Latino woman for President and Vice-President of the United States of America.

Many did not recognize Cynthia McKinney or our dearest colleague Rosa Clemente as a part of this political campaign over the past year, but they are just as relevant to the struggle for progressive change as any other candidate.

This ticket really represented young progressive hip-hop leadership in a generation which has historically been labeled as apathetic.

Our sister Rosa Clemente embodies the historical legacy of our greatest "mothers" who gave themselves tirelessly to the struggle for freedom!

We would have loved to see the first Black woman president and vice-president of the United States, but that is for another time--for now, we salute the McKinney-Clemente campaign!

Valley Matriarch Rosa Broadous Passes On Election Day

We have had the privilege to be taught at Cal State Northridge by the offspring of this wonderful woman of purpose. Her willingness to serve The Valley has been passed down to both Deborkah and Bernardean Broadous - whom have given the learning gift over and over again.

This kind of leadership is what has allowed Barack Obama the opportunity to run for the office of President of the United States. Another soldier gone home. To the family - "for every mountain".

Here is the LA Times article:

Rosa L. Broadous, a community leader who was matriarch both of a prominent San Fernando Valley family with 10 children and of the Baptist church she co-founded with her husband in 1955, has died. She was 89.

Mother Broadous, as she was affectionately known, died Oct. 28 of complications related to old age at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, her family said.

Six of her children became Baptist ministers, fanning out into the community to make a difference just as their parents did from their longtime home in Pacoima.

In 2000, The Times named Broadous one of seven "Great Dames" who helped shape California. These were women who came of age at a time of limited expectations and found a way to acquire power anyway -- and use it for the greater good.

Beyonce On Track Toward Becoming An Icon

Beyonce recently posed for the cover of Gotham Magazine. She swiftly becoming an icon, just with the promotional material for the new album and films. We can easily expect for 2009 to belong to her just as 2006 and 2007 did with Dreamgirls and B'Day.

This is our favorite of Beyonce's new promotional pictures for her new album "I Am... Sasha Fierce".
