In a recent debate with friends, we decided that India.Arie's "Video" is one of the most important anthems to the 21st century women's self-acceptance movement. "Video" hales from her debut album Acoustic Soul (2001).
The song has a chant "I'm not the average girl from your video... my worth is not determined by the price of my clothes..." India.Arie also sang the original theme song to The Tyra Banks Show, "Just For Today",which has always had a feminist undercurrent.
India.Arie consistently challenges women (and men) to look within themselves to find the essence of existence... regardless of how we look on the outside. "Love from within".
