Academy Awards
Watching the Academy Awards on Sunday was the end of a thrilling award season which saw so many talented Black actors accept accolades from all over Hollywood.
Gaborey Sidibe (Precious), Morgan Freeman, Anthony Makie, Taraji P. Henson, Terrance Howard, Anika Noni Rose and so many other monstrous actors have put a dent in the Golden Globes, Screen Actor's Guild Awards, NAACP Image Awards, BAAFTA Awards, Critics Choice Awards, Sundance Film Festival Honors and most recently the Oscars.
Golden Globes
Mo'nique is not the first Black woman to sweep ALL of these awards... but her portrayal of antagonist Mary Jones is the finest performance of them all.
What makes Mary Jones, Precious' abusive mother, stand so clearly from Dreamgirls' "Effie White" (Jennifer Hudson) and Monster's Ball's "Leticia Musgrove" (Halle Berry) ... is not only the delivery, but the message behind the character. Mo's brilliant portrayal has been said to ressurect Mary Jones' all over the world... and offers them a chance to view their sickness on the Silver Screen. Mo'nique has even said that at a private screening of a film, a man came up to her and admitted that he had served as a Mary Jones to his siblings for years and that he would get treatment for his mental illness.
Screen Actor's Guild Awards
That is the power of performance. And not only has Mo'nique whole-heartedly deserved everyone of the above mentioned top-honors in Hollywood.... but she should be given notice and praise as the vessel by which this awful story could materialize on screen, brilliantly! Hopefully, we will see many more brilliant performances by Mo'nique in years to come. We are such a beautiful people!
Critic's Choice Awards
Congratulations Mo'nique, Lee Daniels, Gabourey Sidibe, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey and the entire production team/cast of landmark Indie Black film, Precious.
